Integration discovery
System inventory, stakeholder map, required data flows, identity boundaries, deployment constraints and a prioritized technical integration plan.
Customer-facing engineers who bridge product, integrations, enterprise data, and deployment in complex environments.
You have a product that works in a demo, but each enterprise deployment requires integrations, architectural decisions, and hands-on technical delivery.
The best requisition starts with business outcomes, production ownership, and the skills required to deliver—not a long list of frameworks.

THE OUTCOME, NOT THE JOB TITLE
A forward deployed engineer is not simply an implementation consultant or a support engineer. In enterprise AI deployments, the role owns the difficult boundary between a product and a customer’s actual systems, access policies, data semantics, and rollout realities.
System inventory, stakeholder map, required data flows, identity boundaries, deployment constraints and a prioritized technical integration plan.
A tested connection to the customer’s APIs and systems with error handling, observability, documented behavior and the right access controls.
An implementation runbook, rollout and rollback strategy, engineering handover and documented operational support responsibilities.
WHEN THE ROLE ADDS VALUE
You need someone who can translate a new customer’s systems into working code without handing every blocker to core product engineering.
Data mapping, identity, security, or environment constraints need direct engineering investigation with customer stakeholders.
The FDE should turn recurring custom work into templates, integration patterns, product feedback and reusable engineering assets.
INTERVIEW DESIGN
Present a fictional enterprise API with intermittent 429 responses, inconsistent identifiers and OAuth token expiration. Ask the candidate to design the integration, monitoring, backoff and customer communication plan. Look for explicit trade-offs and failure paths.
A strong answer should explain why decisions were made, not just repeat technology names. See our role-specific technical evaluation approach.
THREE BUYER QUESTIONS
A solutions architect often emphasizes design and recommendations. An FDE should also write, debug, deploy and operate the implementation needed to make a customer deployment successful.
The reporting model varies, but the work needs a strong engineering bar and an agreed relationship with product, customer engineering and account teams.
Assess customer-facing technical discovery, backend integration skills, cloud deployment, debugging, security basics and clear written communication.
Useful answers when deciding whether this role fits your roadmap.
A forward deployed engineer combines software engineering with customer-facing implementation. They integrate products into real enterprise systems, navigate data and security requirements, and help ship production deployments.
Solutions engineers often focus on pre-sales design and technical validation. FDEs are typically hands-on builders who implement, deploy, and support real product integrations.
Yes. The embedded model is built around your engineering workflow, repositories, sprint rituals, and priorities, with onboarding and responsibilities agreed before the engagement begins.
