THE COMMERCIAL MODEL

AI staff augmentation for teams building real systems.

Add specialist engineering capacity to an existing roadmap. Axie focuses on four interconnected roles; your team retains responsibility for technical priorities and product decisions.

THE DEFINITION

What is AI staff augmentation?

AI staff augmentation is an engagement model in which an organization adds external AI engineering professionals to an existing internal team. Instead of outsourcing an entire project, the customer typically owns product direction, engineering priorities, code review and delivery standards.

It is useful when a company has clear technical leadership but lacks capacity or a specialized skill—for example, building a retrieval platform, connecting an AI application to enterprise systems, or deploying tool-using workflows.

A useful distinction: augmentation supplies engineering capacity inside your operating model; a managed delivery engagement delegates more responsibility for executing a defined scope.

Employer-of-record, supervision, payroll, security, IP and location terms are set out in each signed engagement agreement.

GETTING STARTED

Define success before recruiting.

  1. Describe the technical constraint.Document current architecture, the blocked outcome, relevant data and systems, and why the current team cannot address the gap.
  2. Agree the engineer profile.Specify responsibilities, seniority, work hours, collaboration style, evaluation signals and access requirements.
  3. Review candidate fit.Use a problem-specific architecture or debugging assessment, not a framework-trivia checklist.
  4. Clarify the commercial arrangement.Confirm employment structure, scope, security, IP, billing, replacement expectations and offboarding in writing.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions.

What is the difference between AI staff augmentation and an AI consultancy?

AI staff augmentation places engineering specialists within a customer-led team. A consultancy may instead own recommendations or a defined project. Both can be useful depending on the desired level of delivery ownership.

Can we hire just one engineer?

A single embedded specialist may be appropriate when there is already an internal engineering leader and a defined technical gap. A team model may be preferable for cross-functional delivery.

Does Axie promise engineers within a fixed number of days?

Recruiting timelines depend on role depth, availability and interview requirements. Axie provides a realistic estimate during discovery rather than a blanket guarantee.

Who owns the code and intellectual property?

IP ownership and licensing are specified in the engagement contract.
